Private Fisheries
Over recent years, Tasmania has developed a number of Private Trout Fisheries located in various trout fishing areas around the state, many of which are members of TGALT. These are independent waters established by the operators in addition to any public waters covered by the Inland Fisheries Service management and as such usually no IFS trout licence is needed to fish at a private fishery.
They vary from put and take day (or part day) ponds style operations to top quality day or extended stay multi water establishments. Accommodation at the extended stay fisheries is usually self-catering, but some may offer meals by arrangement. Corporate events can also be arranged by appointment.
You are most welcome to take your own fishing gear, but again some offer gear for hire. A few are quality fly-fishing only, but many have a combination of artificial lure and fly-fishing waters.
The quality fisheries are professionally managed for an excellent balance of fish size, condition and natural feeding environments. Thus encouraging a full range of natural insects, aquatic and terrestrials giving rise to excellent fly fishing opportunities. Some of these fisheries have ‘double figure’ (10lbs+) fish, both browns and rainbows.
Shallow margin stalking and fly-fishing to sighted, rising or tailing fish is often a rewarding yet challenge highlight of fishing these clear water fisheries around Tasmania.
